Creativity is intelligence having fun!
The work is self evident. It performs its task without need of explanation. You do not have to ponder its purpose or what it signifies. The work speaks for itself.
The work does not occur entirely by skill or effort. It manifests through a specific dynamic that is comprised of one part evaluation and two parts intuition...and time.
You feel its message.
My career was built upon a unique foundation. While in graduate school earning my Master's degree in architecture, I was recruited by a local architect who was also a developer.
The opportunity to work with him, as well as being the only other person in the office, gave me a very unique opportunity to do architectural design and graphic design simultaneously. He would find some pasture land on the outskirts of the city, or an old abandoned building in the warehouse district, and we would begin the process of developing the property into a viable commercial, retail and/or residential project. As a matter of course, I was tasked with the responsibility of not only designing the proposed architectural structures, but also "branding" the project, i.e. giving it a name, designing its logo, and doing the graphic design of any media collateral necessary for presenting the development to potential investors, banks, city councils, the news media, etc.
Since being blessed with that wonderful opportunity, I have continued to offer and perform both architectural and graphic concept development, design and illustration services equally over the course of my forty year career.
That said, the process I employ begins with what I refer to as "blank canvas brainstorming". At the concept development phase of a project, I believe that nothing should be "off the table", i.e. there should be little to no restriction on the idea generation process. I have found that there will be plenty of time throughout the life of a project to "dial it back". Often project parameters such as construction/production limitations, budget constraints, etc. can cause this to happen, but if limitations are put on the initial creative process, the project design may not ever reach its dynamic, thought provoking potential.
From that point forward, the design is revised and improved upon throughout the design development phase until its time of "construction" is at hand, whether it be an architectural, print media or web project.
"Design is not just what it looks like and feels like. Design is how it works."
